AANR-NW Rooster Rock/Sauvie Island Nude Beach Clean-ups August 25 and 26

AANR-NW has continued to be beach adopters for the two legal nude beaches in Oregon as well as Rooster Rock State Park itself. As such, two beach litter clean-ups must be scheduled each year to fulfill the agreement. For a few years, the water was extremely high for the first one, to the point that even the trails were under water. We have been told the water is down and the beaches will be clear. We will be coordinating with Oregon State Parks, Oregon Fish and Wildlife and SOLVE on these clean-ups. SOLVE on-line sign-ups will soon be set up or sign-in at the event.

See below for more info!

Saturday, August 25 at 10:00 a.m. at Rooster Rock State Park. This is a clothing optional event, if you are cleaning in the nude area. It is highly suggested that you wear foot coverings and sun screen. Hats are also recommended if it is very bright. Bring work gloves if you have them. All tools and clean-up bags will be furnished. We will be working with the Rooster Rock park staff. The Park Ranger Supervisor will have a list of projects that includes light to heavy work.

Volunteers do not have to pay the day use fee. Tell the person in the registration booth that you are there for the clean-up. When registering, you may receive a card to put in your window. Meet at the east end of the parking lot near the restrooms. The clean-up should not last longer than around three hours, and will be followed by a hot dog barbecue. AANR-NW will provide cold water, sugar free lemonade, hot dogs, buns and trimmings and some other snacks. Please do not leave any items visible in your car. The only restrooms accessible from the nude beach are located near the parking area. The Columbia Gorge Express bus ($5 round trip) goes from the Gateway Transit Center to Rooster Rock and on to Multnomah Falls. Details at: http://columbiagorgeexpress.com/

Sunday, August 26 – Sauvie Island-Collins Beach – clean-up at 1:00 p.m. – A parking pass is usually required and can be purchased at the store or deli after crossing the bridge to the island. SOLVE has been able to get us some free day-of-event passes for those that volunteer. Contact the public lands coordinator for info below. Restrooms are close and located in the parking area. We will concentrate our efforts on the gravel road parking area and litter sweeps of the beach area. Meet on the beach near the third beach opening. Those cleaning the parking area must remain clothed. A hot dog barbecue and potluck will be held at around 3:30 p.m. Contact publiclands@aanr-nw.org for further details on these events and on how to get a Collins Beach parking pass. Be sure to bring gardening work gloves (if you have them) , a hat and sunscreen and perhaps a water bottle. As mentioned, we will have cold water and sugar free lemonade.

Free admittance and camping passes to The Willamettans nudist resort will be given out to those that help (one per person) at these events, and there will giveaways of free t-shirts and other items at both clean-ups to participants.

Please consider coming out to assist. Contact publiclands@aanr-nw.org for more info. Future updates will be posted!

Former SLUGS President Ticketed at WNBR for Mere Nudity

John Brower, a past president of the SLUGS (Sun Lovers Under Gray Skies), was ticketed for “disorderly conduct – exposure” at the WNBR  (World Naked Bike Ride) in Houston, and the charge was later increased to indecent exposure, even though the DA apparently stated that the activity didn’t rise to the level of indecent exposure.  John was the president of the SLUGS in the early 2000s, and moved to Houston about ten years ago to be with his new wife and to take a new job .  He first participated in the WNBR in Seattle.  Since moving to Houston, his major nudist community has been with the WNBR folks.  This ride was the 8th annual WNBR in Houston and he was on the planning committee. This ride was well advertised.  While clothed in a sarong, he was ticketed in the parking lot before his ride even began because of a complaint.  The complaints were specifically about nude men.  No one else was ticketed, even though there were nude women, and John wore a sarong through most of the event since he was the trailing rider  On his lawyer’s suggestion, he pleaded not guilty to the charge of indecent exposure.  This ride was a protest for body freedom, cyclist vulnerability, and against oil dependency.  We can support John in his fight by donating to a fund that will help cover his attorney funds at https://www.gofundme.com/john039s-court-case.

AANR Election Results

The results of the AANR election were announced early this afternoon.  Turnout was high.  Eric Schuttauf, current interim AANR Executive Director, said “An incredible eighteen percent (18%) of the eligible electorate cast ballots during the election. This is much stronger than the participation for electing such boards as those who govern employee pension funds, and even government primaries. Whatever the outcome, these are numbers that show you care about the future of your association.”

Our new officers will be:

President – Kathy Watzel
Vice President – Patty Faber
Secretary/Treasurer – Kathy Smith

Trustees will be:
  • Ronna Krozy – Club Trustee Tier 1-2
  • Lewis Dreblow – Club Trustee Tier 1-2
  • Robert Roche – Club Trustee Tier 3
  • Joan Harris – Club Trustee Tier 4
  • Beverly Price – Club Trustee Tier 5
  • Susan Weaver – Club Trustee Tier 6-7
  • Margie Cantlon – Club Trustee Tier 6 -7
  • Fred Van Nest – AANR East
  • Ralph Collinson – AANR Florida
  • Terry Meek – AANR Midwest
  • Karen Lahey – AANR Northwest
  • Ted Peck – AANR Southwest
  • Walt Stephens – AANR West
  • Bob Campbell (who we have sadly lost but whose replacement will be selected by AANR-WC) – AANR Western Canada

Both of the propositions were enacted.  Ballot proposition #1 removed the Philippine Islands from AANR West and Ballot Proposition #2 reduces the number of trustees from 14 to 7.

Turner Stokes 1927-2018

The nudist community lost one of its great friends and mentors in Turner Van Cortlandt Stokes last weekend.  Turner passed away on Saturday at age 90 from prostate cancer. Turner Stokes was the president of the ASA (the forerunner of AANR) from 1986 to 1988.  Turner was an activist who in the early 1980s formed the National Capital Naturists with Lee Baxandall to create and nurture a nude beach on Assateague Island.  When local officials sought to ban nudity on the beach, they organized a legal battle to oppose the ban. See https://law.justia.com/cases/federal/appellate-courts/F2/878/128/167307/   The battle for a nude beach on Assateague Island continued in various ways until it was given up as a lost cause a few years ago.

Oregon-Terwilliger (Cougar) Hot Springs Update

Submitted by:  Shirley Gauthier

A massive rock slide on Forest Hwy 19 prevents entry to Terwilliger Hot Springs from McKenzie Hwy.  It is expected that the rockslide will be inaccessible from the north for six months.  Willamette National Forest spokeswoman Judith McHugh reported that starting early in July road construction will cut off access to the hot springs from Highway 58 to the springs.  She is predicting that neither route will be open until August 1.  From July 9 until Aug.2, motorists will encounter complete closures Mondays through Thursdays and hourlong delays on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

June 12-15 A friend and I chose to visit Terwilliger Hot Springs taking the longer route through Hwy 58.  We spontaneously decided to go not knowing about the future road construction plans.  I have been visiting the springs for over 40 years and this was the first time we had the springs exclusively to ourselves.  A great opportunity to take photos and soak in the quietness of the old growth forest.

Dispersed camping is no longer allowed from the springs to Agusta Creek Road.  Once past the no camping allowed sign you will find several wonderful camping areas to enjoy nude camping.  There are USFS camping grounds within a short drive.  (Once the road construction starts campgrounds will be closed.)

We found a dispersed site and spent four days nude RV camping and hiking.  The weather was not so friendly that we did not enjoy the comfort of clothing at times.

AANR-Florida Success

AANR-Florida Government Affairs and AANR-Florida representatives have accomplished a huge milestone for their state and AANR regions.

To enjoy the full impact of their accomplishment and success go to the Florida tourist website at  https://www.visitflorida.com/en-us/florida-beaches/nude.html

The following was cut and pasted from the visitflorida.com website. “Like naturists themselves, the resorts catering to nudists come in all shapes and sizes, and appeal to a wide variety of tastes. Florida’s 34 resorts range from rustic allure to luxury, family-centric to LGBT.”

At the very bottom of the page you will see that resorts are also listed!  Links to the following are provided  AANR Florida, the Index of Florida Naturist OrganizationsSouth Florida Free Beaches, and B.E.A.C.H.E.S. Foundation.

How does this impact all regions?  Including nude recreation on VisitFlorida.com creates a totally mainstream respect for nude recreation.  Tourists visiting the site and planning to vacation elsewhere will research and see that AANR affiliated resorts exist across the US.  Other regions can use this site as a marketing and PR tool for promoting AANR.
After joining Visit Florida, AANR-Florida developed a brochure to be distributed at all of the state’s welcome centers They then hired John Heather, from St. Leo’s University to develop an economic impact study of nude recreation in Florida.  With this study, working with the AANR-Florida lobbyist, they got the state to agree to include nude tourism on their website.  These efforts were funded with a Visit Florida $5,000 grant that AANR-Florida matched and an  AANR Education Fund $5,000 grant that AANR-Florida matched. These dollars and a massive number of AANR member volunteer hours achieved this success!

The next time you are asked “What does an AANR membership do for me?  Direct them to the visitflorida.com website!

Nudity Legal in Five Countries

According to http://www.inspiredtraveller.in/places-in-the-world-where-public-nudity-is-legal/ , there are five countries in the world where you really have the right to be nude and they are all in Europe.  Spain is the most liberal country.  Nudity is allowed in certain places in Germany.  Within Munich, six official ‘Urban Naked Zones” are found in parks just a few minutes from the city center.  As long as you are not acting weird, it is legal to be nude in the Netherlands.  In France, the law neither allows nor bans public nudity.  Public Nudism is also widely accepted in Norway.

2018 AANR Elections – Remember to Vote

At the beginning of May, AANR members who were current on March 15, 2018, should have received an email with their voter’s registration code.  It will have been sent from  elections@vote-now.com.  The subject was AANR Ballot.  This email contains detailed instructions on how to cast your vote.

If you did not receive this email, call the AANR office at 1-800-TRY-NUDE to get help.  They will help you get your registration code.  The AANR Office is located in Kissimmee, Florida, so call during the week before 1pm Pacific Time.  If you share your email with another AANR member, one of you may need to use a paper ballot, so don’t delay since there will be postal delays in sending paper back and forth across the country.  Actually, I encourage everyone to vote now so that you don’t forget to do so.

The voter’s guide can be found in the May AANR Bulletin, in the member’s only section on AANR.com, and at

https://aanr-nw.org/2018-aanr-voters-guide. The password for this document can be found in your Northwest NudeScene insert in the May Bulletin on the calendar page.

You are encouraged to vote.  In years past, less than 10% of the AANR membership has chosen its leadership.   AANR-NW has led the organization with the best turnout.  Let’s do it again this year. Your vote counts.  Please take the time to vote now.  Voting ends on June 20.

Beach Cleanup Passes

FYI….Did you participate in the AANR-NW GAT beach cleanups last year and receive the free gift card from the Willamettans? If so don’t forget the expiration date is September 31.

This is a very generous gift as it includes your grounds fees and site fees for either a tent or RV site for two nights and three days.

It would be a shame to let this gift expire. Another generous thing is that there were no exclusions concerning holidays, weekends or special event dates.

https://aanr-nw.org/2018-aanr-voters-guide.

Leave No Trace

As many of you know, Squaw Mountain Ranch is a nudist park located east of Portland.  Last year, they closed the park for a week in May to rent the park to a film production company.  Note that this was not a nudism related film, but rather the park was rented because the film needed a location that was a large wooded site with an old logging park with trailers and cabins. That film, “Leave No Trace”, is coming out soon.  About a third of the film was from the filming at Squaw Mountain, and some of the park members were used as extras in a party scene.  The park also got a credit under Special Thanks.  The film was shown at Sundance Film Festival in January, at Cannes last week, at about 15 other film festivals, and is being shown next week at the Seattle International Film Festival (SIFF).  It also goes on limited release on June 29, but we don’t know where it may play then.  We saw the film this week at SIFF and recommend it.

Again, this is NOT a nudist film.  Still, it may be fun to see the park and some of the members in a major picture.  In the film, a PTSD sufferer and his thirteen year old daughter have lived off the grid in a vast urban park in Portland, Oregon, until a small mistake causes them to be discovered and changes everything for them.  This same director and writers previously made Winter’s Bone, which earned 4 major Academy Award nominations, and was Jennifer Lawrence’s first big leading role.

The SIFF schedule for “Leave No Trace” is:

Friday, June 1, 2018, 6:30PM at SIFF Cinema Egyptian
Saturday, June 2, 2018, 1:30PM at AMC Pacific Place

You can learn more and buy tickets at https://www.siff.net/festival/leave-no-trace or at any SIFF box office.  SIFF shows over 400 feature and short films over 25 days, but each film is only shown 1-3 times, so it’s a good idea to buy any tickets you want in advance.  Ticket holders are guaranteed seats up to 10 minutes before a showing, but to get good seats at some films, it’s a good idea to be at the theater and in line at least 30 minutes in advance, and more than that if the film gets to “Limited Availability” or “On Standby” status.  The Saturday showing is already on Limited Availability, so if you’re interested in that showing you should buy tickets very soon and be at the theater early.  You can learn about all the SIFF films at www.siff.net/festival/film-guide or you can watch for “Leave No Trace” elsewhere in late June.

AANR-NW Non-discrimination Policy

On April 15, 2018 the AANR-NW Board unanimously voted to reaffirm and describe the AANR Non-Discrimination policy as stated here.  This was done to give a positive way to answer the questions posed by potential visitors about whether they would be welcomed at nudist clubs.  For example, questions we have heard are whether they are too big or too old or they’re a single man.  Being able to point to the website is an easy way to answer such questions in a positive way.

The AANR-NW Non-discrimination policy reads as follows:

AANR-NW reaffirms the AANR non-discrimination policy by-laws, Section I Article IV A, “AANR welcomes all people willing to conform to its principles and standards, regardless of age, gender, marital status, religious beliefs, ethnic origin or sexual orientation.” To AANR-NW this includes welcoming all single, partnered and married people of all gender identities, ethnicities, sexual identities, ages, sizes, religions and physical abilities.

Clubs will have the opportunity to also affirm this policy, They can let the region know and they will be listed on the regional website (https://www.aanr-nw.org/aanr-nw-welcomes-all/), with the policy, starting after June 15th.
